Miss Representation
In the documentary, Miss Representation, the issue of young girls being influenced by media to only value how they look like is presented. Media also causes the issue of devaluation of women by men who also value how girls look like. Men are learning to hold power sexually and women are learning that only their body matters. Women are then stereotypically perceived to be weak while men are expected to be masculine and strong. Women are only shown to be used sexually and are devalued because to men it seems that only a woman's body matters. This is because men hold a lot of power in our society. Women don't get much of a chance to share their voice and ideas with the world, giving them the image that they are less than men.At a young age, children are exposed to social pressure due to media content. For example, in most G-rated movies, women are shown wearing clothing as sexually revealing as those in R-rated films. Children learn that women are valued for their body and looks and need a man's love. In many Disney princess and Barbie movies, this is shown such as The Little Mermaid and Sleeping Beauty. Men fall for the women's beauty in which they want to find them or kiss them. The protagonist's life centers around a man's love after she meets her partner. Likewise, other cases that represent similarly are pageants. Pageant girls learn that their looks are essential to succeed. Boys are criticized in comparison to girls. They are expected to be smarter than girls and masculine. They are thought of as a lesser person if they are not masculine.
Media causes stereotypes of women and men, and devaluation of women. Only men get voted as president in the united states. In voting, people only look at what women look like. Looks are more focused on than what the woman is saying when making a speech for a social position. They also judge women at a lesser level. Women are thought to be making speeches that are good for a woman as though they are dumber than men. Feminine men are perceived as weak. Men are expected to be masculine, strong, smart, and better than women. Women are expected to be weak, needy of love, and dumber than men. People assume that a woman needs to act more masculine to be successful. Successful roles are thought to be given mainly to men who are thought to be able to do a better job and this is because media treats power as defined by men.
Women must be valued for more than just their looks. Men and women must not be thought of as lesser or better for who they are. Women must be allowed better positions in life and a chance to prove themselves to be as good as men. Stereotypes of men and women must end for their to be equality of all.
I felt like parts of this were a little redundant. However, I agree with what you said. I just think thatthe expectations of men and women were repeated too many times.
