Media Reflection

Image
I consume a lot of media in my life. The media I consume is mainly from books, the ads around me, and music. I watch movies and TV once in a while. I rarely read newspapers and magazines. This media affects me by teaching me about the world around me, giving me knowledge, awareness, emotions and information. Being aware of my media consumption changes my interaction with media by making me more aware of the techniques advertisers are using when they pitch a product to me, and making me decide to use media less. I now know whether I should buy a product or not by the techniques used to sell it. Media literacy is important to proceed knowledge to others. We must also understand the media around us so that we don't get influenced by it and it doesn't affect us unless we want it to. Being an educated consumer is important so that we don't get fooled by products that do not really give us what they say they are giving us and so we make the right decisions over what to buy. I g...

guerilla advertising

Image
link to article: https://www.digett.com/insights/why-small-businesses-should-use-guerilla-marketing After reading an article "Why Small Businesses should use Guerilla Marketing" and watching a documentary called the persuaders, I realized that guerilla advertising can be a creative and easy way to advertise a product by giving a clear and effective message. “Guerrilla Marketing is an advertising strategy that focuses on low-cost unconventional marketing tactics that yield maximum results.” – Creative Guerilla Marketing. There are many shown ways of how to do this. Some companies put images on buildings for advertising, while others put them on or in other objects we use and are around us. Some creative examples are a colgate stick toothbrush in an ice cream, big objects on the street of what their advertising to take pictures with, and dentist numbers as teeth to rip of from gums. Guerilla advertising can be witty and humorous, or sad and scary. An example of a guerilla adv...

my google+ account

Image
link: https://plus.google.com/u/0/106272429933715878690 Since I was a kid, I loved google+. I first started using google+ in 5th or 6th grade. I subscribed to things like funniest text ever, inspiring quotes, cute cat pictures, food and desert pictures, anime communities, and more. I was most inspired by a quote that said, "To work on yourself is the best thing you can do. Accept that you are not perfect, but you are enough. And then start working on everything that destroys you. Your insecurities, your ego, your dark thoughts. You will see, in the end you're going to make peace with yourself. And that's the greatest thing in the world." At many times, I have felt that I'm not good enough and at many times I felt sad at certain points of my life. This quote helped me move on. Whenever, I'd get sad about a bad grade I'd decide that the only thing I can do is to work on myself and try to improve and learn from my mistakes. That is how I made peace with mys...

Merchants of Cool: The "pops"

Image
The documentary, Merchants of Cool, states that people need something that pops to gain attention for trends and this is mainly carried out through sexuality, coolness, and appeals. Merchants of Cool really goes into depth about how people try to find what is cool as many ads are for teenagers, and how sexuality is flaunted to attract attention of teenagers. Teenagers' and kids' attraction to media is primarily what Merchants of Cool is about.         Merchants of Cool makes a point that whatever works the fastest is the most effective. To explain how what pops for ads, the mook and midriff are introduced. The midriff and mook are young men and women usually portrayed in media. They are people who are focused and physical appearance and self satisfaction. This is because of their culture which is valued among teens. In the Merchants of Cool, it is learned that teens copy other teens that they fin...

Women's abortion rights

Image
article link: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/12/28/opinion/pregnancy-women-pro-life-abortion.html The article A Woman's Rights is against women who are coping with pregnancy who are facing jail time. "Say she got in a car accident in New York or gave birth to a stillborn in Indiana: In such cases, women have been charged with manslaughter." Women are charged on accidents that are not their fault that endanger or kill their children.      The writer also is against the eroding of the rights of women by giving rights to unborn babies. "As it has done so, it’s begun not only to extend rights to clusters of cells that have not yet developed into viable human beings, but also to erode the existing rights of a particular class of people — women. " The writer sees babies as a fetus in the womb that are not fully developed people so therefore shouldn't have any rights. The writer includes in her article that 'a handful of Republican ...

Miss Representation

Image
In the documentary, Miss Representation , the issue of young girls being influenced by media to only value how they look like is presented. Media also causes the issue of devaluation of women by men who also value how girls look like. Men are learning to hold power sexually and women are learning that only their body matters. Women are then stereotypically perceived to be weak while men are expected to be masculine and strong. Women are only shown to be used sexually and are devalued because to men it seems that only a woman's body matters. This is because men hold a lot of power in our society. Women don't get much of a chance to share their voice and ideas with the world, giving them the image that they are less than men.   At a young age, children are exposed to social pressure due to media content. For example, in most G-rated movies, women are shown wearing clothing as sexually revealing as those in R-rated films. Children learn that women are valued for their bo...

reflection video

Image
link to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sM6dGqYGLhs The video Reflection by Hannah Park is about a girl who loves skating and is about to give away her skates because of what other people think, but her reflection stops her. The video starts off with the girl's memory of the fun she had skating. Then it shows her looking at her skates and putting on makeup. Then some girls walk in making fun of her makeup and sweat when she skates. At this part I feel indignant because it is wrong to make fun of who someone is. Because of the girls, she decides to get rid of her skates by giving them to the sports store but after her reflection chases after her to stop her, she listens to her reflection and keeps the skates, wipes off her makeup and decides to embrace herself as who she is. I feel sad when she starts walking to give the skates to the sports store. I feel tense when the reflection starts running after her to stop her from giving away her skates. This makes me happy and rej...

son in coma news article

Image
link to article: https://www.wral.com/son-in-coma-mother-shocked-to-find-she-had-little-say-in-his-medical-care/15062774/ In this article a 18-year old is critically injured and in coma. His mother had little say in his medicare and wanted to get legal guardianship to make decisions for her son. Some may think that the doctor should have all the say in medicare because doctors know best and parents can make the wrong decisions. Others may say parents should have some say in the decisions for their children because doctors may not care enough for the patient to make the right decisions or may not thoroughly do the job. I have known a case where this is to be true. One of my friend's dad was not thoroughly checked and so they could not properly treat him and he died of a heart attack. This is why I think that the parents should have some say in medicare although I think doctors should also have some say in medicare because they know best in their profession. I also think it shou...
